Help! Abnormal Labs/ Abnormal Kappa Light Chains
Hello. I'll start by saying that based on my abnormal labs, 2 drs. both said I should probably see a hemotologist and may need a bone marrow biopsy. So that is what I did but am confused and need clarification. Here is a list of abnormal lab results: Low gfr 57, low potassium 3.2, high calcium 11.2, high serum protein 8.7, high hemoglobin 15.2, high beta globulin 1.6, high IgA 600, high PTH intact 87.3, high ESR 45, high urine nitrite (treated for a UTI) high free kappa serum 30.1, no m-spike, high free kappa urine 75.20, high free kappa/lambda ratio 13.12. This was not a 24 hour urine test. Ok. so all drs. agreed that the PTH needs to be addressed and I will be going for a CT scan this week. I agree also. However, although the hemo prescibed the test, he also took blood and a urine test and said to come back in 2 weeks for all results. Here is where I'm confused. he said he sees no evidence of multiple myeloma based on these tests and it is all probably the parathyroid. I would like to know what other illneses are associated with abnormal light chains. Lastly, these are my symptoms: severe bone pain at times especially the last month. Back pain, rib cage pain, shin, hips and pain below clavicle on left side, extreme fatique, extreme dizziness, sweaty and hot but no night sweats, bloody mucus, a pronounced cough ( no flu or cold), Have havd 5 uti's within the year and a upper respiratory virus in April that completely took me out of work and I've just been sick ever since. All responses are very welcome. Thank you.
Re: Help! Abnormal Labs/ Abnormal Kappa Light Chains
Hi Raven, the gold standard for diagnosing any plasma cell disorder is the bone marrow biopsy. There is no way around it. I have had four, and for me, a trip to the dentist is worse. You will hear horror stories online, but most of us have them done and go right to work, etc. As a layperson, there is enough in your labs to raise the red flag-----abnormal light chains, high calcium, bone pain, protein levels, etc. See a hem/onc or myeloma expert asap. Good luck.

Thank you Terry for your response. Yes, the hemotoligist only thinks this is related to my parathyroid and that's why I'm going for the scan. I go back to him in 2 weeks for the results of this. If he still won't do further tests just for the myeloma do u think I should go for a second opinion? Thanks again. Raven
