Hello from Minnesota

by crownest on Mon Mar 19, 2018 8:21 am

Hi all.

My very active, healthy 67-year-old husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in December 2017. His only presenting symptom was a pathological clavicle fracture. M-spike and increased kappa free light chain on bloodwork; all other lab work within normal limits. PET scan within normal limits except for the clavicle fracture / tumor and a lesion in proximal humerus, which has now disappeared. ISS Stage 1, intermediate risk by cytogenetics. IgG kappa.

After 5 sessions of radiation therapy to the clavicle which helped a great deal, three weeks later he started Revilmid, Velcade, and dexamethasone in 3 week cycles and Zometa monthly. Presently in 3rd cycle, now with normal kappa free light chains and normal kappa-lambda ratio. M-spike now 0.43 g/dL (4.3 g/l).

He's already had a consult at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and will undergo stem cell collection there after 4th cycle. At this time, my husband plans to have stem cells frozen and stored for use at a later date. Winter has been tough on us, adjusting to this diagnosis and medical routines, and he just wants a summer and hopefully an autumn to feel relatively "normal".

We are fortunate in many ways, not least to have a dog that slid into my husband on lake ice, causing him to fall and fracture his clavicle completely, after it likely initially fractured when he lifted the turkey out of the oven on Thanksgiving!

Sorry to welcome you to this club no one wants to be in, but glad to hear your husband found it before he suffered worse consequences. Best of luck in his treatment, and hope he gets to enjoy the summer as he desires.
