Headaches with smoldering multiple myeloma

by Kathymcknight60 on Tue Aug 08, 2017 5:30 pm

I have smoldering multiple myeloma, and I have been having major headaches lately. I had a normal PET-CT ON May 2, 2017. I had hypertension and the primary care physician thought this may be the problem. He put me on medications and now my blood pressure is down, yet the headaches continue. What could be causing them?

I have an appointment with my primary care physician on Wednesday morning.

Hi Kathy,

By any chance, do you have IgA or IgM-type smoldering myeloma? I ask because headaches can be a side effect of hyperviscosity syndrome (blood thickening) and this condition is more common in IgA and IgM-type myeloma patients. Regardless of what isotype of smoldering myeloma you have, it's easy to test for hyperviscosity.

Hi,

I have igm and the headaches got severe. The problem was cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure was high. A neurologist can help decide whether a spinal tap will help. Also, an ophthalmologist can check eye pressure.
