To All My Friends at the Myeloma Beacon,
As Halloween approaches, I hope all of your (or your loved one's) immuno-goblins are well behaved and not at all scary. Happy Halloween!

Re: Halloween
Thank you for the laugh, Mike, especially because Halloween is my favorite holiday and I found out today that after four cycles of Velcade, my lambda light chains increased, so more Velcade for me. GRRR. I plan to enjoy tomorrow anyway!
By the way, we're dealing with myeloma at roughly the same age. I was diagnosed five years ago, when I was 52, and am pretty sure it was active for at least 1 - 1 1/2 years before that, based on the pain in my ribs and low red blood cell counts.

Re: Halloween
Happy Halloween! After my dx, the first Halloween really scared me! I saw all of the skeleton and skull decorations, and thought of my damaged bones. Then, have you ever noticed how all the witches have GREEN faces, which to me represented nausea!
Luckily I am back to enjoying the holiday, looking forward to the children coming to the door for their treats, and making veggie snacks like lychees with raspberries (eyeballs), a pumpkin veggie tray with the pumpkin 'vomiting' up dip, a cauliflower 'brain' with sauce on it, for a party later! BOO!!

I love it:
"I hope all of your (or your loved one's) immuno-goblins are well behaved and not at all scary"
2 years ago today I was heading down for my SCT. I really thought my good days were over as my husband and I headed to a hospital in a bigger city for 6 weeks. But the last 2 years have been such a blessing.
I don't know if others with cancer are like me, but I talk to everyone with cancer, now. A friend who had stage 4 ovarian cancer and was in remission, called last night. I was sad to hear her cancer seems to have spread and she is back to the chemo battle.
I also send good wishes to everyone struggling with cancer today.

Re: Halloween
3 years ago today my husband and I left Mayo for our 9 hour trip home from his autologous stem cell transplant. He's out of remission now, and has recently been started on Pomalyst, Kyprolis, and dex. He's only been through one cycle (and it was a bit rough), so it's too soon to know if it's working. However, the last 3 years he has felt pretty good and has been able to do all the things he enjoys.
It would be a happier Halloween if it weren't supposed to snow here in Kalamazoo today!

After a rough week (not health related, yippee!) that comment made me smile from ear-to-ear! Thank you from the bottom of my heart

Re: Halloween
Thanks for the nice comments!
I'm glad my little pun brought a smile to some of you. The day after I made the post, I read Karen Crowley's moving monthly column about why Halloween is never funny for her ("Happy Halloween – You Have Cancer!"). For a while I felt pretty dumb for making this little joke compared to Karen's really serious and much more important column.
But now I feel better, knowing my joke put a smile on at least few folks' face. Thanks! And I hope you all had a good Halloween. Nancy Shamanna - it sounds like you had some scary dishes planned.
Dana - yes it looks like we have been going on parallel paths with multiple myeloma at around the same age. I hope more Velcade does the trick for you and that your lambda light chains go down.
Rumnting - I hope the new treatment works well for your husband and that it gets easier to tolerate. Please keep us posted on how it goes.

Re: Halloween
Hi Mike. Karen's column made me stop and think, too. My diagnosis came on May 1, May Day, which used to be a favorite day. The year following my diagnosis, however, my daughter's best friend, who is like a daughter to me, was married on May 1. That changed the meaning of the day back to one of my favorite days.
My immuno-goblins are not behaving, unfortunately, but I had a wonderful Halloween. After 4 cycles of Velcade / dex, my lambda light chains increased slightly. As I noted in a previous post, I started cycle 5 today. Thanks for the wishes that the two additional cycles work!
