Mine came back after awhile. I had nice old guy head of hair. It returned a little wiry but after 6 months was as nice as ever.

Howdy Folks!

I just found your conversations and thought I'd chime in. It's been 1 year and 4 months post my autologous transplant for multiple myeloma, and after having high-dose melphalan and losing all my hair, I'm glad to say it has grown back, very curly and extremely kinky, fine and totally uncontrollable, but it's back.

I didn't see anywhere about any comments about the color? I always had long ash blonde fairly straight hair. When it grew back, it had a mousy brown dull color. It has only now started to now and then a hair will fall out or get caught in my brush. I noticed how strange yesterday that the hair has turned back to ash blonde at the roots. A hair I lost was 1/2 brown and 1/2 light blonde. The contrast on my head I thought it was coming in gray, but nope. I compared to my husband's gray, and it's definitely coming back blonde again, but no sign of the kinky curls leaving.

Oh well, I'm alive and still kicking, that's what's important. Good health to all!

Hello Everyone,

Can the hair loss after high-dose melphalan be permanent?

My sister had her transplant October 22 (almost 3 months) and is worried her hair will not grow back.

Thanks and best to all.

Lita

I had my autologous stem cell transplant in November 2017. My hair didn’t really start to come back until March 2018. I bet she’ll start to notice new hair growth soon.

Lita,

My hair was slow to regrow too. I had some light regrowth at maybe 2-3 months, but it took probably six months to get a head of (very short) hair. I wish your sister the best and strength as she recovers. I found the recovery required a lot of patience with everything. For me, it's been 15 months and I'm feeling pretty much completely back to me (hair and strength).

Best of luck,
Courtenay

Hello Lita,

I felt that I had lost my hair twice during the stem cell transplant process. First it started to fall out during the stem cell harvest process, when i was taking Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide). That was in December, 2009. The hair had just barely started to grow in again when I had the stem cell transplant in January 2010. My family got me a nice wig to wear, which was helpful. My hair grew back in, quite curly and easier to manage than my usual hair. By May I was starting to drop the wig, and I got lots of compliments on my new, short curly hairstyle! But then my original hair grew back in, straight.

After that experience I could really empathize with people who have lost their hair through normal aging, and am grateful to have normal hair again. It is now greyer than it was before!

It's been a year and four months since my last transplant, and my hair didn't begin to grow again, really, until the end of March. so it was five months before I saw definite regrowth, Now, though, my hair is, if I pull in the curls, almost shoulder length.

And very curly (but not kinky) though the curls, I think, are finally beginning to grow out, darn it. My hair came in very 'salt and pepper', with the contrast quite obvious. The dark hair is almost black, and the white is very white. I love my chemo curls and color!

But both are growing out, darn it. The dark hair is turning light brown/red, (or auburn, or whatever, it's the color I grew up with) and I'm losing a lot of the white. I'm beginning to look a little like a skunk who couldn't make up it's mind, or got scared by a coke truck, whichever..

We are all different, but I believe the vast majority of us do get our hair back, with some surprises on the journey. ;)

Hi Karen,

Don't worry about your hair. I believe it will regrow after 3 months or so.

I had my high-dose melphalan and autologous stem cell transplant in the middle of last September. I lost most of my hairs and my wife shaved for me. My hairs had a significant grow last December even though colors changed a little bit.

Good luck!

I had the melphalan on December 19 and 20, so now I am just over 2 months post transplant. I only have to shave my upper lip and some of my chin. My sense of taste is not good. They took swabs on my mouth and tongue and found no fungus or yeast issues. I surmise that leaves melphalan.

Am I on the right track to assume that as the side effects wear off my hair will come back along with my taste buds?
