Gary peacefully passed away at Trillium Lodge Hospice in Parksville, BC, on December 19th 2017.
He was born in Salford, England and raised in Kitimat BC and from there had a varied career including framer, draftsman, plan checker and finally building inspector for the Regional District of Nanaimo.
Gary had a passion for the outdoors. He loved camping, canoeing, fly fishing, and exploring as many wild places as possible. He shared his adventurous spirit with his family and everyone he met. Gary was a talented wood worker and carver, a talent he inherited from his father. He made beautiful pieces and shared them widely.
Gary impressed everyone who knew him for his fortitude, patience and goodwill as a twenty-year survivor of multiple myeloma. The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Steve Nantel, and the many other compassionate caregivers who supported him through this illness.
Sincerely
Ian Hood (son), posted on Behalf of Gary Hood

Re: GaryH passed away
It is nice of you to share this sad news about Gary, Ian. He also impressed us at the Beacon with his courage and willingness to share. My grandmother lived at Trillium Lodge in Parksville at the end of her life (she passed away before the turn of this century). It was a nice friendly place and there was a resident cat too. Best wishes to you and your family.

Re: GaryH passed away
So sorry to hear of the passing of GaryH. I am also sorry I never got the opportunity to personally meet him as I am a fellow multiple myeloma patient in the nearby community of Qualicum Beach. Gary sounds like he lived life large with a positive outlook and had many friends. Twenty years living with multiple myeloma is a remarkable achievement. My condolences to Gary's family.
