I have lambda monoclonal gammopathy. My hematologist is not a myeloma specialist. I have been prescribed Fosamax (alendronate sodium) for my bad osteoporosis.
Does the type of bone medication matter for MGUS osteoporosis vs menopause-related osteoporosis? My doctor seems to think my bone loss is unrelated to my MGUS.
Will the Fosamax help with the bone pain? Also, what does 'Lambda restricted plasma cells' mean for my lambda MGUS?

Re: Fosamax for MGUS
Badblood,
I would suggest going to a multiple myeloma specialist to get his/her take on this.
Zometa is one of the typical drugs used to deal with bone destruction in multiple myeloma patients.
While fosomax is in the same family of drugs (bisphosphonates) as Zometa, it's a much lighter duty bisphosphonate than Zometa. With multiple myeloma, you typically need a much stronger bisphosphonate to cope with bone destruction process that can occur with myeloma. But you obviously don't want to over-medicate yourself, hence the reason I suggest talking to a multiple myeloma specialist as well.
Lambda-restricted MGUS simply means that the particular free light chain that is involved in your MGUS is the labmda free light chain.

Re: Fosamax for MGUS
Hi Multibilly,
There is not a myeloma specialist in or around my area. On my recent dexa scan my lumbar t-score was -3.5 and z-score was -2.6. worse then my 2011 dexa scan. The hematologist just put osteoporosis for my history. I guess I will take the fosamax for 2 years and see if my bones have improved. Good to know not to worry about lambda restriction too. Thanks
I will go crawl back in my hole for another year.....
