Fosamax and smoldering myeloma

by Lori RD on Sat Aug 10, 2013 1:02 pm

I have a patient with smoldering myeloma than has normalized with a year of curcumin/fish oil therapy, and calcium/magnesium/d supplementation. She is a healthy 72 yo female. No longer with protein in her urine, no anemia.

She has always been slender and struggled with osteoporosis. About a year prior to smoldering myeloma dx, she had been on fosamax for 9 years and was advised to stop d/t length of treatment. A scan 1 year later showed decline when bones were previously stable.

She was then advised to take Zometa. Due to her slight size and concerns about ONJ, she has only had 3 treatments over a year. DEXA shows improvement in one hip and wrist, decline in other wrist, and decline in spine, which is a first.

Seems like she should go back on fosamax. Does this bisphosphonate have any anti-myeloma activity, and at this point, should that matter?
