Foods to avoid if you have multiple myeloma?

by Kioto on Tue Jun 26, 2012 11:26 am

Hi, everybody!

I wish you all achieve your goals in the treatment of myeloma, patience, and the main thing, health!

I'm from Russia, sorry for my English. My dad recently was diagnosed with myeloma, Stage 3. All family has a strong stress, but now we hope for the Lord and were adjusted on treatment. Dad received melphalan and prednisone.

I would like to ask about a food, I cannot find information on a ban anywhere or restriction of certain foods for multiple myeloma. The doctor forbade to eat chicken eggs and limited meat to a minimum, restrictions concern all products with the high content of protein, whether it is correct? In what products you were limited by your doctors? How about sugar?

Thanks in advance.

Kioto,

Diet depends on overall health and may certainly need to be adjusted, especially if a patient has heart, kidney, or other issues. I was diagnosed with Stage 2 multiple myeloma last December, and have no heart or kidney problems. I was advised to eat plenty of protein, but to avoid sugar and foods that quickly convert to glucose through the body's metabolism.

Hi All,

I have been lurking on this form for about a month now. I am so grateful for a community like this.

I also am interested in knowing what foods, if any, should be avoided when you have multiple myeloma.

My father, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma a few weeks ago, has greatly reduced his meat intake (avoiding all beef), no sugar / refined carbs. I'm not sure whether dairy is okay.

Thanks!

For the most part, there's been no food or beverage I've been told to avoid due to myeloma. That said, I don't have any of the sorts of illnesses that often go along with it, such as kidney problems. I think it might be that just having myeloma doesn't result in specific food issues, but the other health problems that can go along with it might result in that. Since these issues differ from one person to another, you'd have to look at your own specific health situation to see what you might need to avoid. It may also be that a particular treatment regimen would require some sort of dietary restrictions. When I was coming off of my stem cell transplant, I was on a special diet for those with compromised immune systems. No fresh fruits, no fresh vegetables, no restaurant food, etc. This lasted until my immune system was back to functioning enough to fight off any food borne illness. That was the only time since being diagnosed that I had to worry about my diet, though.
