Foot pain after stem cell transplant

Hi,

I would appreciate any information of how to help my brother.

My brother, 49, had an autologous stem cell transplant in November 2014, for t(4,14) multiple myeloma. after 4 rounds of CyBorD (cyclophosphamide, Velcade, and dex) chemo. He had a great response to the stem cell transplant.

He was then put on lenalidomide (Revlimid), but could not tolerate it. He is having foot pain, most likely neuropathy. He is also on a blood thinner, so cannot take certain pain meds. He has just been started on Neurontin (gabapentin) for pain in feet.

Any other suggestions as to how to treat his pain. I am wondering too, about Lyrica (pre­gabalin). Does anyone know if this is better than Neurontin for foot pain?

Any other suggestions about foot pain greatly appreciated.

Hi SuzMal,

Sorry to hear that your brother is having foot pain. I have had some foot pain, feeling like little electric shocks, related to peripheral neuropathy. Lyrica has been a big help to me, stopping the "electric shocks." I still have other issues related to the peripheral neuropathy, like numbness in my feet, but at least the pain is gone.

I'm not sure if what I experienced is similar to what your brother is dealing with, but wanted to mention that Lyrica helped me, at least.

I had some numbness and tingling with induction and some after SCT. I bought compression socks at the local drug store and that seemed to help – or at least I decided that it could help. Mind over matter.
