Food grade hydrogen peroxide for myeloma?

by kjpoppit on Tue Oct 29, 2013 2:15 am

Since being diagnosed with multiple myeloma I have received lots of unsolicited advice. Everyone is well meaning but I am sure some of the advice is just plain weird.

Has anyone been told or heard of ingesting food grade hydrogen peroxide?

I was told it would kill any viruses in me if I was, say, getting a cold and they even had the thought I could cure cancer this way.

Personally I don't believe this but told my friend i would research this.

You are not the only one getting this advice....switch to a vegan diet, Joel Fuhrman diet, macrobiotic diet, Gonzalez protocol with red meat, various supplements and on and on. My mom who lived well into her 80's used hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash. However, to tackle cancer, and specifically myeloma??? Please.....

There have been two patient columns related (broadly) to this topic in the past several months. They may be useful to some who are reading this thread:

Letters From Cancerland: The Wheatgrass Juice Chronicles, by April Nelson, and

ME vs. multiple myeloma: A Healthier Me, by Kevin Jones.

There are also several discussions on "alternative" and/or "complementary" therapies here in the forum. Just type one of those keywords into the forum search box directly above the forum for a list of some of the discussions. (The search will work best on just one of the words at a time -- either "alternative" , or "complementary", but not both at the same time.)

I usually leave it up to the Beacon staff doctors to answer questions like this but I feel comfortable enough to say that ingesting hydrogen peroxide as a cure for viruses and cancers is quack science. Hydrogen peroxide is a fairly simple chemical compound and what it does and how it reacts with other substances is very well understood by anyone who has had biology or chemistry classes at the undergrad level. I see no possible pathway for hydrogen peroxide to selectively kill cancer cells or viruses. I do not see how ingested hydrogen peroxide would even get very far in the body before it is reacted and consumed by other organic matter including your healthy cells before it reaches any cancer cells. It is not going to be flowing in your blood stream. I tried using it right out of the bottle many years ago as a teeth whitener before I knew better. It whitened the teeth but it also damaged my gum tissue permanently. A quick search on the internet found this entry regarding hydrogen peroxide on Wikipedia. I was surprised to see that this bad advice is common enough that it discussed ingesting it as a means for curing disease. It states that people have died from doing this. My best advice from my experience is that people who offer this kind of advice are well intentioned by almost always repeating something they heard or read with little or no understanding of any of the science involved and often distrust “main” stream medicine and science or the “established” anything in general and easily believe in conspiracy theories.

Never heard that and not buying ingesting it, but! I did use it heavily after my SCT to "disinfect" any and all raw foods. Know my immunity was very low I used a watered down bath for things like raw fruit and salad fixings. I'm not presently doing it and don't recall the ratios or it and water. I suppose one could use the regular full strength without harm because it is only 3% I think.

I am not aware of scientific study of this and would not recommend it.

Thank you everyone for your input. I did not find any information myself which led me to believe this was a good idea. A lot of you have walked the walk I am about to go down and appreciate all of your opinions.

This was before my diagnosis of multiple myeloma. I used it in a nebulizer; but I think there are better things to try. Agree with the vegan diet and especially juicing.

"Oxygen therapy introduces substances into the body that are supposed to release oxygen. The extra oxygen is believed to increase the body's ability to destroy disease-causing cells. Two of the most common compounds used in oxygen therapy are hydrogen peroxide and ozone—a chemically active form of oxygen." ...

"Available scientific evidence does not support claims that increasing oxygen levels in the body will harm or kill cancer cells. It is difficult to raise the oxygen level around the cancer cells in the middle of a tumor because the blood supply tends to be poor. But there are differences in the way cancer cells use oxygen that may allow new treatments to better target cancer cells."
