Good evening all,
Life has been busy, sorry have not had a chance to touch base in regards to my husbands first visit with the hematologist. To me it went well. Now, wait and see.
We were warned by the nurse who put us in the room at the clinic, that the doctor tends to get behind, but, she considered him one of their best doctors, if not the best. He is very thorough and spends the time with his clients to explain everything in laymans terms, and answer any questions or, to do on the spot testing.
And, even though he was about 1 hour behind, this is exactly what he was. He explained to hubby and I, that based on the results from the family doctor, he suspects MGUS. But, that he was going to rerun some tests, do some that had not been done, more xrays, and wanted to do a bone marrow aspirate and biopsy there today.
Did the aspirate/biopsy that day (a rough time for hubby, especially as first biospy was a dry tap). Doctor apologized that he had to do a second biopsy. Very professional, very thorough and now a wait and see.
Our medical system here frustrates me, as we cannot get back in until the 21st of this month. But, at least we are in.
My concern, is that he was discussing that it would be just monitoring if MGUS, as hubby not symptomatic, but, I believe he is. He is anemic, he has Schmorl's nodes on the spine (not lytic lesions as far as we know). So, do I push for a specialist in multiple myeloma? I will have to make this decision, once we get the bone marrow aspirate, plasma cell count back.
I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving in Canada, and a wonderful weekend, everywhere else.

Re: First visit with the hematologist
Happy Thanksgiving Kim
I would just ask the hemotologist for a referral to a myeloma specialist next appointment.
