I live in the United States and we talked to neurosurgeon. He said he can't offer anything surgically. We asked about the kyphoplasty. He said it's too late because my dad had to do chemo and if done before chemo would have worked and to go to pain management.

We then went to the pain management specialist, who said he can't do anything, was against the injections, and just upped the dosage of the pain killers, which cause a lot of side effects such as stomach discomfort, burning inside pain, and all the medicines he take have constipation side effect. Even with Miralax there is constipation.

We're going talk to another neurosurgeon probably at the hospital where he will have a transplant and see what they can do. Hopefully they can cover the cracks, such as kyphoplasty where cement is put into the cracks.

Also he had radiation done already but still has extreme pain.

Is there a lesion inside the cracked vertebra?

if you think its spine and rib bone fractures (and re-fractures, because it keeps flexing when your father gets in and out of bed, or is going up/down stairs, etc.)

1. Try renting a mechanical bed and getting 24-hour x 3 days Duragesic (fentanyl) pain patches to get by for a few months until treated. See this posting here in the forum by Dr. Edward Libby, one of the Beacon's Medical Advisors.

2. Avoid stairs as much as possible or walk down / up stairs sideways holding the body up with the railing.

3 Pad the seat in your car (where your father sits) with 2-4 inch foam and use lots of pillows for his neck and to rest his arms. This will stop shock / vibration to his bones when he must go to medical facilities (for blood tests, etc.)

4. Read all of Dr. Libby's posts here in the forum.

5. Find a neurosurgeon or neurologist who can do epidural steroid injections (ESIs) using Decadron (dexamethasone). The pain reduction of the injections can last for months. Also ask about other epidural injections that use pain killers as an option.
