Re: Esophagus pain & oral fungal infection post transplant
I had esophagus pain post-transplant. I was prescribed a liquid suspension medication that is used for ulcers but unfortunately I cannot remember what it is called. If you give that description to the doctor they may be able to help.

Hi, Andrew.
Thank you for this. Do you remember how long post transplant you experienced those symptoms? My sister is taking some kind of oral suspension. I believe it's Maalox. She is also given some anti-ulcer medication by an IV. The healing is still extremely slow. However, she managed to swallow a couple of teaspoons of runny porridge today (Day +13). This is progress.

I had the symptoms within 5 days of the transplant. The medication that I used was a prescription and the name began with a "C"

Gala,
I hope your sister is doing better. I read your post today and I hope you sister has long been over her esophagus problem. I had to post maybe to help someone else gong through the same issue.
It sounded in your post like you were talking about my sister. She was having the same problem that got so bad she could not eat or drink anything. She was in so much pain in the upper region of her body. She started spitting and throwing up this clear, thick, and sticky mucus. Everything she did get down her neck would come back up before it reached her stomach . The doctor did not seem to know what it was and did not seem to care. The nurses wanted to give her meds for her stomach. Finally she got someone to listen to her and they did an endoscope and found she had something stuck in her esophagus. For over a month my sister suffered for no reason because we were not forceful enough to get anyone to listen.
After the scope she is so much better. She still has some mucus but nothing like before. She has an appointment to get her esophagus stretched next week.
Don't give up when something is wrong! Keep on till someone listens and best up luck to all.

Hi, I am glad you managed to get help for your sister. It's terrible that she had to suffer when it was not necessary. It's good you could advocate for her. I do agree that it is important to persevere when something is wrong. Thank you for posting.
My sister also had an endoscopy, but in her case it was the strong chemotherapy regimen she received – the fact that she had EDAP and then melphalan within a very short stretch of time – that caused the mucositis. She was completely stripped of any mucus membranes in her entire body and it took forever to heal, but it did heal eventually. She can now eat food as normal.
