Husband has multiple myeloma, just lost job

by Hanging in there on Fri May 15, 2015 11:29 pm

First day back to work full time after transplant, husband's job was terminated. We are at wits end.
He's still fighting fatigue and has a bone marrow biopsy scheduled in 3 weeks for staging.

Anyone had this happen? Any suggestions are appreciated. He's 3 years from retirement.

Hanging in there,

That's awfully rough timing to hear about losing a job under these kinds of circumstances.

I am assuming you are worried about insurance coverage?

If you are in the USA, you have the option to extend your husband's current insurance through COBRA for up to 18 months.

Alternatively, this would also qualify as a "life-event" and would allow your husband to get on to an ACA plan (Obamacare) outside of the normal enrollment period.

A hybrid approach would be to get on to COBRA now and then switch to an ACA plan in the fall during ACA open enrollment. But note that dropping COBRA in mid-stream does not qualify as a "life event", so if you go on COBRA, your only choice to then switch to an ACA plan is during ACA open enrollment or at the end of 18 months.

Good luck with all this.

My wife relapsed after 2-1/2 years so she went and applied for disability. After the application and doctors report stating there is no cure, she was fast tracked and actually got retroactive payments for the year. Apply asap and use this to pay for cobra. After he is off work for one year I believe he can qualify for medicare . Do not give up
