I'm curious, my husband's transplant doctor ordered 11 toxicology tests: amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cannabinoids, cocaine, methadone, methamphetamine, opiates, oxycodone, phencyclidine, propoxyphene.
Is this typical?

I had quite a few tests before transplant. However, I was tested for exposure to HIV, hepatitis, c-diff, chicken pox virus, plus some others I don't recall.
Sounds like the doctor wants to cover all the bases to prevent any mishaps or allergies during the procedure as pain medications and Benadryl are frequently given.

No, I did not have any such similar tests. I wonder why and am curiously watching for a valid reason. The only thing I could think of is if your husband has severe pain from a back injury or something and the doctor thinks he might have built up a tolerance to one or more.

Prior to a transplant, yes, they will blood test for everything! Including narcotics. They have to to avoid interactions.

Hi Wekebu: I do not recall the specific tests that you cite. Seems odd to me. I don't have any better info on that issue. Rgds and good luck.

My transplant doctor told me that they will test me for infectious diseases and viruses such as hepatitis, HIV, C. diff., etc.. a few weeks prior to my autologous stem cell transplant. He said that they do not test for marijuana, opiates, benzodiazepines, or illicit drugs. Note that I am located in Ontario, Canada.

We just got a list of tests that should be done before transplant and there's no drug tests on it. Doc didn't even have anything against using cannabis oil.

Thanks for the replies. My hubby has always been a skinny guy. The kind of man you're jealous of because he can eat anything and still hasn't gained a pound since high school. I think the doc passed judgement, thinking he's a druggie. He tested negative for all the tests.

Yes, my wife was screened for everything also! Came out negative (of course!). Now, had they tested me ... just kidding!
Best of luck with the transplant! Janet has just got home from UCSF 3 days ago and is recovering fairly well.
