Does Velcade cause hair loss?

by JanM12 on Thu Nov 24, 2016 8:02 pm

I have just recently been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, and my doctor said they would be using Velcade as my chemo med.

Does anyone know whether or not there is any hair loss with this treatment?

Thank you!

My father received Velcade (bortezomib) and did not lose his hair.

My husband also took Velcade and did not lose his hair and was told not to expect to lose his hair.

Best of luck with your treatment.

I was told I wouldn't lose my hair but around the third month of treatment my hair did begin to thin. It got thinner and thinner until the fifth month when my Velcade dosage was reduced because of my great response to treatment, At that point the hair loss stopped.

It wasn't a big issue for me because I still had hair (no patchy bald spots) and I wore a wig or hat (it was winter) when I went out. I was amused when I received compliments about my hairdo from strangers who didn't know I was wearing a wig.

No. Hair loss is caused by cytotoxic drugs such as cyclophosphamide. Velcade is not a cytotoxic drug and is no more likely to cause hair loss than aspirin!

I have been on Velcade since February 2016. My doctor said I would not lose my hair. About 4 months ago I noticed that it was getting thin and mentioned it to his nurse who said "he said you would not be bald - he didn't say you wouldn't have thinning hair." Perhaps it's age related (I'm 68) or perhaps it's the Velcade. Whichever it is I don't care - the Velcade put me into complete remission (from Stage II) in 7 months and I am now on "maintenance" one shot a week. I'll choose life over hair any day! :D

According to the list of side effects for the chemo cocktail of Velcade (bortezomib), cyclophosphamide and dexamethasone, only the cyclophosphamide is stated to contribute to hair loss. And that apparently depends on the dosage. So during the early chemo cycles, cyclophosphamide may not be enough to cause much hair loss, perhaps some thinning. Things apparently different for stronger doses used prior to stem cell transplants.

I am only on my first cycle, hair and beard intact.
