Re: Recovery from vertebrae fractures

by genk on Tue Oct 09, 2012 6:22 am

I was finally diagnosed in August in 2011 with multiple myeloma. My spine stared to collapse in April of 2011 as the compression fractures started to cause me great pain. The right side of the muscles next to my spine was in severe spasm day and night with no relief for 8 months. I was in agony till my unknowing PCP who had been giving me what was equal to baby asprin and sending me for physical therapy. I finally switched PCPs and found one that found out in short order I had multiple myeloma . I finally had a couple MRIs and it was discovered I had 7 vertebrae with compression fractures. i was referred to a neuro surgeon and finally got kyphoplasty on three of the seven broken vertebrae in Feb 2012. I was put on 100mg morophine every twelve hours plus 10 mg oxycodone every 4 hours. I could not lie on my back from April 2011 till Feb 2012. I slept sitting up in a recliner with my head hanging during that time . The kyphoplasty helped but did not of course did not eliminate the pain. I was then able to lie down for a short period of time but still sleep sitting up in a hospital bed. I have not experienced a halt in the pain so to this point I cannot tell anyone that it stops, I am sure each case is different.
