Does my overall conditon a positive beginning treatment?

by genk on Thu Oct 13, 2011 6:46 pm

I am 61 year old male, My overall physical condition is that I have no blood pressure problems, no cholesterol, problems, good heart function, BMI normal, have absolutely no bone lesions confirmed, I am told I have normal organ function as I start treatment for stage 3 multiple myeloma. I do have 4 compound fractures in my thoracic spinal area. Are my chances of benefit from treatment better than if I had some difficulties in these areas going in? Looking for Doctors response.

While having a good physical condition at the start doesn't necessarily predict how sensitive your myeloma will be to treatment, it does often help patients tolerate the side effects of treatments better, especially more intensive treatments like stem cell transplant. This may help minimize dose reductions and/or allow you to stay on treatment longer, which certainly will help you fight your myeloma. So I think it's definitely a positive as you get started.
