Do I have multiple myeloma?

by AnxiousPaddy on Tue Sep 08, 2015 7:35 pm

I have pain in both shoulders, which feel like rotator cuff. Treatment with vimovo has not improved much. The pain radiates to the chest wall and the thumb side of both hands.

Shoulder and chest x-rays are normal.

The doctor ordered a serum protein electrophoresis test. Although one of the immunoglobulin groups was higher than the reference range, no abnormal bands were found. No Bence Jones proteins were detected in a subsequent immunofixation (Urine) test.

At this point what is the likelihood of having multiple myeloma?

I'm not a doc, but I would say your chances of having multiple myeloma are very low if you don't have anything abnormal registering on a serum electrophoresis and urine immunofixation test ... and the xrays were normal. I'm assuming all your other routine blood tests – including hemoglobin, kidney function and calcium level – came out normal?

Lots of things like infections and inflammation can cause a temporary bump in an immunoglobulin level.

I had similar pain but just on one side. It turned out to be a cervical disk collapsing on one side. The pain from something like that can seem strange but it all depends on which nerves are getting pressured. I would think that it could be possible that you have a disk collapsing or slipped that could be affecting both sides. I had no back or neck pain just the shoulder, chest and thumb on my left side. I hope whatever it turns out to be can be corrected quickly.

Thanks for the responses.

Went to appointment with haematologist, he said nothing to worry about. Still bothered though. Going back next week to get results of serum immunofixation test he ordered.

How many people with multiple myeloma present with no symptoms? I thought that some people are.
