diagnosis overseas

by jan on Fri Jul 01, 2011 7:49 am

My husband has just been diagnosed with multiple myeloma while we live overseas. His contract will last another year while his insurance will cover him (we hope). While trying to plan ahead I am wondering where we should settle when we return to the US. We do not have residency in any state, but we are citizens. How far ahead should we begin applying for benefits? It is overwhelming just thinking of getting information about benefits as we begin learning about the disease.

That's 2 big cans of worm you're opening. I bet the responses make your head spin. For me, my first choices were Dana Farber Cancer Institute (Boston, MA), Moffitt Cancer Center (Tampa, FL) and MD Anderson (Houston, treatment). I don't know if the Massachusetts Health Care Initiative has a waiting period, or allowances for people returning from overseas. Depending on employment status you may be best served with a state-run insurance plan. Obamacare is seriously challenged and won't really begin until 2014, too late for you on many provisions. Maybe starting now you can get on the rolls for the waiting period in Massachusetts. Without a lot of other specifics, that would be my choice. Massachusetts Health Care (Obomneycare) and Dana Farber (THE best). I'm 62 and was just diagnosed in Mar '11. Best wishes.
