Diagnosed 8 months ago, about to start maintenance

by Donnie on Mon Jul 04, 2016 1:28 am

Hello Everyone:

I was pleased to find this forum. I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in late October 2015. Underwent chemotherapy and targeted therapy for four months. Received autologous stem cell transplant in April. Spent month of May regaining some strength and stamina. Started back to work in early June. Will start a daily maintenance medicine tomorrow or the next day (it's a relative of thalidomide; I forget the precise name). Latest bloodwork was last Wednesday. Hope to know the results of that this week.

I responded very well to treatment. Bone marrow biopsy after chemo revealed no cancerous plasma cells. No detectable M-spike immediately after transplant. I'm very hopeful of a long survival (perhaps wishful thinking?) because x-rays and other tests revealed no detectable damage to bones, heart, or renal system.

I'm feeling pretty good. I'm physically strong. Stamina is returning. My wife and I have returned to work, painting, carpentry, repair, handy-man stuff. Not as many hours as before, but that is also improving.

I was greatly encouraged by some reports that a goodly number of people are surviving fifteen to twenty years. Some even longer. Of course, I know that doesn't mean I will; but I appreciate success stories.

My religious faith helps me cope with the seriousness of this disease. I have an eternal hope. That helps me to be less afraid.

All the best.

Donnie

My husband was diagnosed in October, but his doc wanted six cycles of Revlimid, dex, and Velcade. Really did well. Headed to Hopkins mid July for testing for a stem cell transplant in mid August. Keepin prayers and fingers crossed everything goes well like it did for you. We were wondering how long after transplant that things would return to somewhat normal, so thanks for your info. Keep up the good work, continue to grow stronger, and long life wishes.
