Dexamethasone versus prednisone

I'm smoldering and, hopefully, won't need treatment for a while. Or until treatment with less side effects come along.

My question is this: Has anyone refused dex based on hearing the side effects and asked for prednisone instead? If so, what was the doctor's reaction/opinion?

I've been on prednisone for asthma flairs (40 mg, then a taper) and also high dose dex (40mg 4 days on and off for months) and, to be honest, I find the prednisone is harder for me! It really bothers my eyesight -- making things blurry and light sensitive -- and this really bothered me. Dex did this a little bit, but not as bad, and I could still read and watch TV, whereas that is hard for me on prednisone!

That's interesting. I've taken prednisone for asthma, too. Starting with 50 mg and tapering off by 10 mg per day for 5 days. I had no side effects at all. Haven't had an asthma attack in 3 years, knock wood.

I guess dex effects different people differently.
