Are there any people here that are on daratumumab (Darzalex) who also take Eliquis (apixaban)?
I am trying to get into a daratumumab trial and the doctor wants me to switch to Coumadin (warfarin). I really don't want to do that if I don't have to. He says that there isn't much experience with the newer anti- coagulants and the myeloma drugs and there is a risk of drug / drug interactions.
I know there are several people here that are on some of the older drugs like Revlimid and Eliquis but haven't read anything about the monoclonal antibodies. I am currently high-risk smoldering but not far from being full blown myeloma.

My wife is on daratumumab, Pomalyst and dex. She takes a baby aspirin a day with no other blood thinners.
We are getting this combo without a trial now that daratumumab is FDA approved.

I just spent a week in ICU with a pulmonary embolism, so aspirin wont do it for me. The trial I am trying to get in is a single drug with 3 different admin schedules. It is for high risk smoldering.

My husband isn't on Darzalex, but I wanted to share something we learned about Eliquis in December.
My husband was in ICU right before Christmas with multiple pulmonary embolisms in both lungs. When they were getting ready to discharge him, the discharging physician planned to put him on Eliquis instead of the Lovenox (enoxaparin) injections they had been giving him while in ICU. It would be more convenient taking a pill and he wouldn't need the frequent blood testing and/or have dietary concerns.
I always update my husband's hematologist about his significant medical events (she is 3.5 hours away at a major hospital downstate). In one of my emails to her I asked if she agreed with him taking Eliquis. She did not, and wanted the discharging physician to call her to discuss it. Her opinion was that there have not been enough studies yet to demonstrate that Eliquis is equally effective as Lovenox or Coumadin in patients with multiple myeloma. So, my husband is on Lovenox injections twice daily now.
Another thing I learned from my sister, who is a pharmacist: Smaller hospitals in rural areas will have reversal agents for Lovenox and Coumadin in case patients need it for some reason. However, my sister was concerned that our local, smaller rural hospital might not have the reversing agent for Eliquis. Not that it would necessarily be a concern for everyone, but she was concerned about it in our area.

Thanks for responding. Lovenox is not an option for me because of my size. I am 6' 4" (1.93 m) and weigh close to 300 lbs. Lovenox dosage is calculated by weight. There currently is no reversal agent for Eliquis, but there is one in the pipeline awaiting FDA approval.
Since I am currently high-risk smoldering and am fully aware of the inevitability of what is coming in the future, my hope is to maintain as close to a normal life as I can for as long as I can. That's why I wanted to avoid the frequent blood tests and dietary restrictions that warfarin would bring. That is also why I am hoping to get into the daratumumab monotherapy trial. There is the hope that it could allow me to remain smoldering for at least a while longer and not subject me to the possible side effects of the traditional anti-myeloma drugs.

Now you made me worry baby aspirin is not enough protection for wife. Especially since she spends a lot of time in bed.

I had multiple bilateral pulmonary pulmonary embolisms and was in the hospital for 4 days. This occurred the same week I was diagnosed w IgG kappa multiple myeloma I had heparin IV, then transitioned to Eliquis (apixaban), 5 mg twice a day. My oncologist said there was no conflict with doing dexamethasone and Eliquis at the same time. I'm currently on my second cycle of Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone (RVD), 14 days on, 7 days off, after a sluggish response to cyclophosphamide, Velcade, and dexamethasone (CyBorD). Numbers have all moved dramatically in the right direction on RVD. So far, no issues with Eliquis.
