Hi Tydahs87,
I have been following your father's progress through his stem cell transplant, and I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your posting regularly about what he's been experiencing and how he has been doing. Your posts are very helpful.
I hope the worst of the transplant side effects are behind your father at this point, and that his recovery continues at a rapid pace.
Cheers!

Day +7:
My dad woke up with nausea this morning. Usually his mornings start out like this, and after he eats he begins to feel better, and by afternoon he is usually feeling okay. Today he has been feeling really tired and weak. His back is also pretty sore, which he believes may be from the mattress at the hospital. My mom talked to the nurse about having Healing Services come up to try to massage it, but they said with his counts being so low it could cause internal bleeding. Instead, she may opt to try to go pick up a foam mattress topper from the store to see if that improves the back pain.
His blood counts from this morning just came in:
White Blood Count: 260 (270 yesterday), these still have not gone to 0;
Hemoglobin 10.6 (10.9 yesterday);
Platelets 37,000 (59,000 yesterday).
The doctor was surprised that his white counts didn't come down more and thinks he is still going to need a transfusion of platelets and red blood cells before the stay is over.
Nothing major to report today, just sleeping and watching movies to pass the time.
Also, no hair loss yet.

Re: Dan’s stem cell transplant
Day +8
No major changes on Day +8, my dad felt good enough to get up shower, go for 3 or 4 walks, and eat his meals with no stomach issues. He did seem to have an irritated eyelid and he was given antibiotic eye drops to help.
Day +8 Blood Counts:
White Blood Count - 320 (increasing)
Hemoglobin - 10.0
Platelets - 14,000
Day +9
On Day +9 he woke up and his platelet level had dropped from 14,000 on Day +8 to 4,000 on Day +9, so he was given a transfusion of platelets. Overall the transfusion went well with no issues! The doctor also said he was happy to see that his white counts are beginning to come up. He said they may fluctuate for the next few days, but it is a good sign to see them increasing. However, they did test the white blood cells for neutrophils (infection fighters) and the level was 0. The doctor wants his neutrophils count to be at 500 before they clear him to leave the hospital.
Day +9 Blood Counts:
White Blood Count - 390 (increasing
)
Hemoglobin - 9.6
Platelets - 4,000

Day +10
No big changes or updates today. Blood numbers continuing to trend up and Dad is feeling good. Actually says he feels as if he shouldn't be there. He has been able to walk around and keep all food down with no issues.
The only big change was: hair. Started noticing his hair was falling out. We went up for a visit and hung out for a while and when my mother arrived we gave him a good buzz cut. He is in good spirits, hair still looks good! Was a little nerve racking during the cut with the concern of the low platelet level and any small cuts, but we made it through with no issues.
Day +11
Today we receive good news, my dad will be discharged tomorrow! Really can’t believe it is happening so soon. We thought he would be there for at least 4 weeks, but he responded great to treatment and we are preparing for him to head home tomorrow! He did get one more platelet transfusion because that numbered dipped, but it went smooth once again. All other blood numbers are trending up! My dad has known nothing but work his whole life, so we are going to need to make sure he relaxes and takes it easy for a while once he gets home. He is set for a checkup back at the transplant center on Thursday to see how he is doing.
Day +11 Blood Numbers:
White Blood Count: 840
Hemoglobin: 9.2
Platelet: 9,000

Hello Ty,
It's wonderful that your father was able to get through the tough part of the transplant process so quickly. Congratulations! I hope his discharge went without any major hitches, and that he is enjoying being home again.
Best wishes,
Cheryl
