Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone!

My dad is doing well so far. He got his melphalan on Tuesday and Wednesday and got his stem cells yesterday. He feels well so far, but the nurses say the nausea and diarrhea may really hit today or tomorrow. My brothers are going to see him today and I am heading there tomorrow.

We're all different but, for what it's worth, I'm on Day 8 post transplant and had melphalan nausea during the first few days that was quite well controlled by Zofran (ondansetron) and Pepcid (famotidine). Diarrhea started on Day 6 and Immodium (loperamide) works well to prevent it for me.

I've been neutropenic since Day 6 - another couple of days and the cell counts should start to go up again. So far, no fever spikes

Hi Melissa. I had my SCT at Johns Hopkins, and we lived outpatient across the street. Mine was in January, so I lived in sweats. I got sick enough that I was moved to inpatient care for nearly a week. During that time, I just wore the hospital gown.

As you'll read in other posting strings, the chemo can affect taste buds for a while. You may find when your dad comes home that there are only a few foods that he will want to eat, and foods that he normally likes that just don't taste right for a while. If his digestive system is affected, you will need Boost or a similar drink for him.
