Hi there.
I was diagnosed in June of this year. Needless to say, my husband and I were blindsided by this, and we've been reading other people's postings which have been full of great information. Anyway, this morning I created my own profile and thought I would start by introducing myself.
I'm a 45 year old female who worked out 4-5 times a week, so I didn't think much of it when my back and hip started hurting. My doctor did not think x-rays were necessary at that time and put me on a prescription. Obviously the pain didn't go away, and I ended up in the ER with 2 shattered vertebrae.
Fast forward to now and never in my wildest dreams did I think our life at this point would consist of terms like kappa light chains and stem cell transplants, but here we are and we are trying to push forward.
I'm looking at getting the stem cell transplant in January 2018.

Re: D'Anne - multiple myeloma diagnosis at age 45
Hi D'Anne,
I'm pleased to welcome you to this amazing group of folks.
You are so young to be hit with this. At least I was 66, not 45.
I was diagnosed the same month as you, but I was most fortunate that my family doctor suspected something was up ("borderline anemia") and kept her eye on my blood tests. She referred me to an oncologist before I had bone issues.
By now you must know that you are responding to treatment, if you expect a transplant in January. I had a severe skin reaction to Revlimid (which was working very well) and was off it for four months. Last week I started a reduced dosage and am OK so far.
So I expect you will pass me up and get that transplant done before me. I look forward to hearing about your journey!
Thank you for sharing!

Yes, I've been responding very well to treatment so far. Currently I am on a weekly Velcade injection and dexamethasone. I was on Revlimid too, but after getting a rash as well, my oncologist took me off of it.
Thank you for responding and I wish you the very best on your journey through this.

Hi D'Anne,
I was 48 when diagnosed this year in May. I had a compound fracture at T-10 on my spine. Incredible pain.
I did induction therapy all summer with Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone and had vertebroplasty done on my back at the end of August. It relieved some of the pain but not enough for me to get off the painkillers.
I had my stem cell transplant at the end of September and got out of the hospital October 13. Recovering at home. Tests for M-protein last week show "none detected." Great news, I'm in remission. It is a long journey, but very doable. I keep wishing the back pain will go away some day.
Have you had surgery on your back yet? Just hang in there and keep positive thoughts.

Hi Adam,
I'm so glad to hear your test results came back with none detected and that you are in remission! Yes, this a very long journey for sure. I am thankful I have great family and friend support but at the same time reading about others and their stories have been so helpful to both my husband and me.
Yes, I had a spinal fusion June 9th. I had physical therapy which helped a ton and I finally got back to the gym around the beginning of September. I do low impact exercise: elliptical, recumbent bike, and some swimming. I don't take any pain medications, but if I do too much, it still aches. I'm not one to sit around, so let's just say it aches a lot sometimes by the end of the day lol.
I'm anxious to get the stem cell transplant done for sure. I hope the recovery from your transplant is going well.
Thank you for responding. I will keep positive thoughts and you do the same.
