After 9 months of going to many doctors, I was finally diagnosed with smoldering multiple myeloma and amyloidosis. I start treatment this week with CyBorD (cyclophosphamide, Velcade, and dexamethasone).
My question is: Can you have the Velcade shot and take the dex and Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide) a different day? Does that help the symptoms?
Also, how long after taking CyBorD do side effects start?

For amyloidosis, CyBorD is a very good therapy. I would not consider yourself as having two different disease (with smoldering myeloma as well). This is one disease.
In terms of tolerance, most people tolerate this regimen very well. Typically, if the Velcade is given subcutaneously and the Cytoxan and dexamethasone orally on the same day, weekly for 4 weeks and then a week off, most people really do fine. Of course, how well someone is before starting is important here - specifically, if there is any cardiac involvement.
I would not start off getting too creative with scheduling (i.e. moving some of the medications to different days). Start off in standard fashion. If you are having difficulties, talk about them with your doctor. Usually changes can be made to mitigate any side effects.
Side effects can occur at any time. Some, like neuropathy, often take longer to manifest, whereas others, like diarrhea and/or constipation, may only occur on treatment days. Again, side effects with this regimen are typically mild and manageable.

I have amyloidosis and smoldering myeloma. Before my recent SCT, I was on CyBorD, followed by Revlimid in place of Cytoxan. I had very few side effects. The only thing noticeable was a little 'up', and then a little 'down', from the dex. I was pretty healthy otherwise, going in.
So, don't assume you will have side effects, or that the ones you have won't be manageable. Try to keep a positive attitude if you can and see what happens.
