Over the past few months, materials I've been reading and videos I've been watching increasingly have doctors speaking of the prospect of cure -- cure in the sense that patients recently diagnosed will ultimately be cured. I'm not speaking of only Dr. Barlogie, but there have been countless doctors at large academic centers speaking of cure.
I understand that the process of finding a cure is incremental and that it takes time to analyze new treatments retrospectively.
My question is this: Do people here believe a cure is possible with the currently available agents? If not, is your answer different if the sure-to-be-approved drugs are considered (CZ, Pom, Elotuzumab)?

Re: Cure
I have no doubt at all that a cure is either already in the wild and the statistics are not yet of sufficient quantity and time to be available, or that one is in trials, or that one is on the bench heading to trials. In other words, I have no doubt that a great many of us reading this are certainly going to be the first generation to be cured of this disease.
Let me correct myself. I suspect we're going to end up with more than one successful route to cure, and I think that's going to be important, because as they learn more about multiple myeloma, they are learning it is not a single cancer, but that it needs to be looked at as a class of cancers instead.

Re: Cure
Good question.
I think that predicting a cure is premature but, the disease is far more treatable than 10 years ago. We still need to find the right "backbone" of treatment like CHOP (Cyclophosphamide + Hydroxydaunomycin + Oncovin+ Prednisone) for lymphoma. Perhaps it will be RVD (Revlimid + Velcade + Dexamethasone). In addition, we need more breakthrough drugs and understanding of the disease. I dont want to throw cold water on the hope for a cure though. Without question the future looks bright !
