Re: Curcumin supplement recommendations?

My husband took curcumin during RVD induction, then stopped curcumin during a brief switch to CyBorD induction and thru transplant. Now on maintenance of Revlimid only. His doctor at Dana Farber said he could resume taking.

He is only a little less than 6 months post transplant, so don't know if it is helping or not, but doctor felt it could help and wouldn't hurt. If we see his platelets decrease significantly, or if his counts become lower than we want, he will stop the curcumin in order to see if that is the cause.

Nancy, I can fully understand using the 500 mg capsules since they are much easier to swallow than the 1 gram tabs. How many of the 500 mg Doctors Best caps were you taking per day?

Thank you, BN

That is a good question, Bar-none, but I don't remember since it was more than a year ago. I see on the packaging that 1 - 3 pills are recommended per day for an adult dosage! I am not really disparaging the use of curcumin, but don't think it made much of a difference for me. I only took the capsules for a few months though. We do use turmeric in our cooking at home, but I think that is a much lower dosage than in the capsules.

Hi,

To update my latest curcumin adventure with Longvida. I have been using Longvida by Myodyne for several weeks. Recently my on-line supplier was out of Myodyne so I ordered the NOW brand.

I noticed immediately that the caps were a lighter yellow color. Much lighter than Myodyne.

Also, I definitely do not feel as mentally clear or as sharp as before with Myodyne. Subjective, I know, but my experience.

I'll be going back to the Myodyne.

Best! BN

I started Revlimid plus dex and Zometa every three months after I was placed in Stage IIA on February 16, 2015.

Simultaneously, I changed my diet - no sugar, no meat, no chicken. Maximum fruits and vegetables. Every morning ABC (apple, beat and carrot) juice, baking soda, lime and honey four times a day and turmeric, honey, coconut oil and milk concoction twice a day.

After the sixth cycle, my M-spike is zero. The result after seventh cycle shows better KFLCS and K/L ratio. On the 22nd, I will finish the eight cycle with reduced Rev dose. I am scheduled for checkup on January 3rd, 4th and 5th and hope to be declared in CR.

I was born in India. Turmeric is part of all veg and meat cooking. Anything which says curry has turmeric. I left India in 1976 and my use of turmeric decreased. But since I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, I am heavy user of turmeric. In addition to homegrown turmeric in above concoction I use 500 mg turmeric capsule from Puritan pride a day.

I plan to continue my diet and turmeric all my life.

Article analyzing various curcumin supplements:

"Which Curcumin Supplement Has The Best Absorption?", Superfoodly, April 16, 2016 (full text of article)

Discusses:

  • Curcumin + black pepper
  • BioPerine
  • Longvida
  • Theracurmin
  • Meriva
  • BCM-95
Conclusion:

"For curcumin bioavailability Theracurmin and Longvida are the clear winners. The enhanced absorption with piperine (i.e. BioPerine) is trivial compared to what phospholipids or nano-particle size (i.e. Theracurmin) can accomplish. Presumably this is why Longvida and Theracurmin don’t even include piperine … that was a first generation supplement.

For curcumin plus other nutrient bioavailability the old school BioPerine is still a good choice. It has the most versatility of use, since it doesn’t contain curcumin and you can choose the dose yourself. This can be useful, considering that research has pointed to a difference in absorption ability based on dosage amount. Those who care to follow the most current research can change the amount of curcumin they consume based on the latest findings. Plus, it’s fairly cheap versus the phospholipid supplements. With a cheaper price per pill, for the same price you can take more dosages throughout the day, which may help compensate for BioPerine’s inferior absorption.

Hi All,

I wanted to update the forum on a small change to my curcumin regimen.

While I am still taking the 8 grams of Sabinsa C3 (Doctors Best 1 gram each) daily. I now take all 8 grams in the morning, and no longer take the Longvida or the Theracurmin.

I'm also still on Revlimid maintenance 10 mg 21 days on and 7 days off. A side effect has developed probably due to the Revlimid. I now have a heart arrhythmia that comes and goes but will be the subject of my next appointment. Interestingly it seems to go away the more rest I get.

All my best! BN

Hello Bar-none.

Could you develop a bit why you are dropping Longvida? I am getting my wife to take curcumin supplements. We don't really have the same brands in Europe, but I could find Longvida. Theracurmin is harder to find currently.

Also, we are doing fresh curcuma root juice with carrots, bit of oil and pepper. We have access to organic curcuma roots rather easily, but I am not sure how efficient that would be versus pills

Advice would be highly appreciated.

Hi Pauillac,

My decision to drop the Longvida was to go back to a baseline. I started on the 8 g of Doctor's Best shortly after my diagnosis in 2014 and added and omitted various supplements but always kept the 8 g of Doctor's Best. The reason was that I have not been able to ascertain a correct dosage level of the Longvida, whereas with the Sabinsa C3 (Doctor's Best) I found more dosage information to reference.

Additionally, the cost is not covered by insurance of course, so I am trying to cut my expenses.

If Longvida is all you can find, it is probably a good choice, but I have no dosage advice. If you are able to find anything, please post to the forum.

Best! BN
