Could my mother's myeloma be spreading?

by sazjo20 on Sun Nov 24, 2013 6:17 pm

My mum who is 68 yrs old and has had multiple myeloma for 4 years. Things have been running great and was in remission for 1year but she has been told her lites are rising and will probably be put on treatment again at her next appointment in 3 weeks.

She also has been complaining of terrible pains in back and hip so they gave her a full head-to-toe xray and also an mri of her spine. Could they think its spread?

Please help this is so scary. The waiting game til 12th december begins.

I look forward to answers ..xxx

Spreading might not be a good term, unless it has to do with bone lesions. The more important thing is how she will respond to treatment again. The scans will tell if she has involvement in the form of lesions.
Time will tell.

Did she have bone lesions before in her back or would that potentially be something new?

Getting periodic scans is very routine and you definitely want to get to the bottom of any new development...so it is good that they are taking this step and it means they are being thorough.

However, if it is driving you crazy waiting to hear the results of the X-Ray/MRI (very understandable), you can simply contact the facility(s) that performed them and ask for a copy of the radiologist's report (along with CDs of the Xray and MRI results). The radiologist's report is usually available within a day or so of having the scan.

The downside to this approach is you might end up looking at a report that may leave you with more questions and fears than answers (and some medical jargon that you may not understand)....and you would be hanging until December 12th.

In my case, I like seeing the data (good or bad) as soon as its available. I can wait the usual week or two until I see my oncologist to then get his take on it. But I understand that this may not be a good approach for everyone. Only you can make that determination.

Best of luck to you and your mum.

I assume you mean lites are rising as you indicated in your initial post. They are talking about light chains, I would assume.
