Concerned I may have myeloma from radiation

by Kopesy on Tue May 29, 2018 10:17 am

Hello all

I'm a 28 year-old male who has been having a nightmare of a year so far.

My concerns about myeloma and other blood cancers started in March after a CT scan I had late February time. Since after that scan I've had lots of symptoms linking to radiation exposure. After contacting the radiology department about my concerns, they've given me false information about where I had my scan and what machine i used. Long story short, it's being looked into legally now.

So about a month after I began noticing extreme fatigue, petechiae and bruising. My first batch of basic blood tests came back as normal and the second showed an elevation of tsh in my thyroid 3.8 - 4.4, but again, other than that, everything was normal.

Now I've noticed I've become really thirsty all the time. I'm going to the toilet a lot too, and when I do I urinate for a very long time. The last few weeks has had by joins ache in my knees and ankles, as well as aches and pains in my ribs and chest. Sometimes the pain in my ribs hurts so much when I breath in that it's hard to breathe at all! I've had more and more marks appearing on my body. Indents in my skin when laying down or after sleeping, taking ages to go away, and even more petechiae and small blood spots on the insides of my cheeks. My right foot has an on/off warm sensation that comes and goes.

Since my scan I've also had 2 incidents of really bad lower back pain on the right side. So much so I could barely walk. The most recent one being a couple of weeks ago. Not sure if this could be kidney related or regular bone pain. I also have enlarged lymph nodes of either side of my groin that appeared about a month ago. I'm waiting on a scan and possible biopsy on those due to concerns of lymphoma.

Since my head CT I've also been having trouble with my digestion and actually had an abdominal/pelvic with contrast. Nothing came up abnormal apart from mild tree in bud inflammation in my left lung. I've not had the flu or anything like that since Christmas. I've read respiratory problems are also a thing regarding multiple myeloma?

Speaking about the flu, while I've not got it, I have been having a lot of hot flushes during the nights with slight sweats and the constant need to clear my throat with a cough.

I'm seeing my GP in about half an hour with a few tests I've found to be useful at diagnosing multiple myeloma.

Protein Electrophoresis; Immunofixation Electrophoresis.

Quantitative Immunoglobulins

Serum Free Light Chains

Serum immunoglobulin heavy chain/light chain

Urine free light chains (Bence Jones protein) 24-hour test?

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

My only hope is he gives them to me. I've been to my GP a lot already this year, and due to my being so young and the unbelievable circumstances regarding the radiation exposure, I'm scared he won't take me seriously and write me off as being anxious.

Now since this botched head scan I'll admit I'm extremely anxious, but who wouldn't be? I began taking Zoloft (sertaline) 50 mg/day a couple of weeks ago, which has calmed me down somewhat, but still hasn't relieved any fears and doubts regarding my health.

I hope this is the right place for this. I don't want to offend anybody actually going through something like this.

Jordan.
