Hi,
I am a 68 years old and have multiple myeloma. I had back surgery from T10 to l2. I am on treatment with cyclophosphamide, Velcade, and dexamethasone.
I do not take calcium. I get very sick. I was wondering if collagen hydrolysate might help my bone strength, what its side effects are, and whether it might interfere with the myeloma treatments I'm getting.
Thanks,
puppy

Re: Collagen hydrolysate for bone strength?
Hi Puppy,
Has your doctor discussed having you take bisphosphonate treatment, such as pamidronate (Aredia) or Zometa (zoledronic acid)? They are used to promote rebuilding of bone. I had fractures in my back, and that treatment was given to me, and did help. I was also advised at the time of diagnosis not to take calcium supplements. I thought that they would be good for healing, but since one of the signs of myeloma is to have excess calcium in the blood, they were not recommended. Excess calcium in the blood can cause problems with the kidneys.
Hope that helps, and good luck to you!
