Chronic Infection and MGUS

by Multibilly on Sun Dec 08, 2013 3:59 pm

I've lost track of how many times I've read about folks on this site with recurring infections/illness that have either MGUS or SMM (I find myself blessed that I don't suffer from recurring illness in my smoldering stage). This is a fascinating study on the subject. Pay particular attention to the conclusion whereby it is postulated that preventing infections in MGUS patients could prevent the progression to more serious forms of multiple myeloma.

Hi Multibilly - I read the link and didn't totally understand everything, but what jumped out to me was the last sentence '....as anti-infection treatment is expected to CURE MGUS and prevent progression to multiple myeloma.' I have never read any research suggesting a cure for MGUS. Like you, I don't get sick and asked my oncologist if working with medically involved people (tracheostomy care, immune challenged, etc) could worsen MGUS or enhance progression and she appeared unconcerned. This article is concerning for those exposed to infections/viruses with MGUS. Thank you for the link!
