Can chromosomal abnormalities change over time?

by Lisa Stephenson on Thu Jun 16, 2016 9:34 am

Good morning, friends!

I have a quick questions to put out there to all you multiple myeloma gurus.

Can a patient's chromosome profile change during treatment?

Luckily, I did not have a chromosomal abnormality when I was diagnosed, but I was wondering if that can change from the disease.

Thank you all for your time and wisdom! ;)

Yes. The myeloma clonal cell population can evolve and change and you can develop new chromosomal abnormalities, including when you are undergoing treatment. If the myeloma cell population wasn't prone to evolving, it would be much easier to treat the disease.
