My husband worked on an island that is strictly industrial. He worked in the lab at an asphalt company as a civil engineer. Across the street from that was also the Valero refinery. Both places are sources of benzene exposure. He would come home every day reeking of chemicals. He would throw them down in a pile on the floor of our closet, and I did the wash.
Ten years later, he suddenly develops acute myelogenous leukemia. He died a year later. I am now having all of the symptoms of lymphoma and will be undergoing surgery to remove one of my neck nodes to test for it. If I test positive, I have no doubt in my mind that it is because of my second hand benzene exposure from his clothes.
Benzene exposure is the reason for AML in young adults in the majority of patients. It is also known to cause lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
Hope this helps.

Re: Chemical exposure and risk of developing myeloma?
We all remember Love Canal and the unbelievable amount of human misery it caused.
Myself I was in the Tonkin Gulf (Vietnam) in 1965 on board the USS Midway for 10 months, drinking, showering in and eating food cooked in water distilled directly from the top layers of the sea water we were churning through on a continuing basis running through our own garbage. As you know, petroleum products float on top of water and are easy to be picked up by a ship's intake pipes.
Agent Orange causes many diseases - as you will see if you just google "Blue Water Navy".

This is a good video of the Valais State Wildlife Police (French-speaking part of Switzerland) pulling over a cleaning company truck to inspect which chemicals the driver has in his possession; the officers seize two containers of chemicals prohibited in Switzerland due to their danger; it was mentioned the cleaning company was fined in the thousands of dollars for possession of illegal chemicals.
It's nice to see that there are people trying to make this earth a healthier place.
