Chat Room

by habubrat on Sat Oct 09, 2010 2:56 pm

I know that Myeloma Beacon is expanding and the forums are coming along nicely. I was wondering if you had been considering a chat room feature?

I say this as, I am not able to participate easily in "support groups" and found social cancer websites my life line for almost 2 years from diagnosis through treatment. I made many friends there that I still keep in touch with. It might be nice to consider this feature for those dealing specifically with multiple myeloma.

I would echo Lori's request. We've gained so much knowledge from this web site and the folks posting articles and comments. Thanks (Kay aka Kansas)

Hi Lori and Kay,

Thanks for suggesting adding a chat room to the Myeloma Beacon.

We have been thinking about doing this for a while now. However, we've been concerned that there might not be enough people interested in the feature to really make it useful. After all, for a chat room to be useful, there regularly has to be a minimum number of people in the room whenever it's open, or people just won't be interested in using the feature. (Who wants to go to a chat room if you're likely to be the only person there?!)

That having been said, maybe we've reached the point where we can expect there be regular use of a chat room if we made one available.

We'll look into the idea some more and see what we can do.

If you (or anyone else) have any additional ideas on the subject, or further suggestions, don't hesitate to post them here in the forum, or private message them to me.

Thanks again!

- Boris.

Boris,
Have you given any more thought to the chat room idea? I noticed right now there are 8 people on the site - not sure when most are on - but perhaps if we communicated and know most are on during a certain time, I think it would be great for everyone. Again, thank you for providing this site -- for not only those with multiple myeloma but caregivers as well. Rex and Kay (Kansas)

Hi Kansas,

Thanks for bringing this up again. It's interesting that you should raise it just now, since my colleagues and I just discussed this issue last week.

Given the increased activity we've been seing both in the forum and elsewhere on The Myeloma Beacon, I think you can expect to see a chat room being added to the site sometime very soon.

You also can expect sometime soon to see one or two other changes here in the forums that will further increase the opportunities for discussion. I could see those changes being announced within another week or two.

I'm glad you (and others) find our site helpful, Kansas. I also appreciate the many contributions you've been making in article comments and here in the forum.

All the best,

Boris.

I would love to have a Chat Room for multiple myeloma - patients and caregivers. There are so many times when I have a question and don't want to call the doctor, or cancer center - nothing major, just a "what do you think" type situation.

I do hope you continue with the idea.

Thanks much for the Forum, and all the good information provided. It isn't "just the cancer" ....it's all the side effects of the disease and the treatment that cause the gray hair!!!

Thanks for the additional feedback, Sarah.

We're definitely moving forward on this.

In the meantime, don't hesitate to post any questions you have, or experiences you've had, in the various parts of this forum. As you'll quickly see, you'll get lots of feedback and opinions on whatever you ask or write.

All the best,

Boris.
