Re: Chad's Autologous Stem Cell Transplant Journal

Hi Chad,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. My husband just turned 50 and found out the week of his 50th birthday. It's been about 6 weeks and he is finishing his second round of Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone treatment. The doctor thinks 4 rounds should do the trick. He will then get ready for his transplant.

It is very encouraging hearing all of your stories as we are still trying to wrap our heads around all of this. He has always been a very healthy, active, never-goes-to-the-doctor-ever kinda guy.

I keep hearing everyone say that they found out because of a fracture. He had gone to urgent care because of upper respiratory infection, got on some medications, and never got better after a few weeks. His mom made him go to the hospital when I was with my daughter in Florida. It was discovered at that time that he had multiple myeloma. He will start Zometa as soon as insurance approves it.

Thank you all. I have been doing lots of research and this is my first post. My husband has been avoiding research (not sure why). I think his doctor said not to read too much on the internet at the beginning. I think what the doctor meant was all the bad stuff and older patient stories. I find it very useful.

I am a 45 year old (caregiver), and the good news for us is that we married fairly young and started a family pretty early (I couldn't wait to start a family and my husband made me wait until we were at least married a year before trying). The point being my children are 20,19,and almost 18. My daughter graduates in May while both of my older boys are are already away at school. I have been a stay-at-home mom and now can dedicate my time to him while still making sure we are there for my daughter during her final few months of high school.

I feel for the families with younger children and trying to deal with multiple myeloma.

Staying positive and thanks for listening. It felt good to write about it to others who can relate!

Chad,

I am so glad you are doing well. My husband's doctor went with the same treatment after transplant as yours and used almost those exact same words to describe his reasoning.

I will keep good thoughts that they are right.

Wow Chad, this is AWESOME news! I wish I could say I'm not jealous but ... :) My hubby is Day +4 today. He's feeling pretty poor and unfortunately we celebrated our little boy's birthday while dad was in the hospital, but that is what Facetime is for! We, like you, are planning a beach vacation when he is Day +100.

You mentioned four more months of the Velcade, Revlimid and dex and I am curious will you still be taking maintenance Revlimid? Again, glad to hear you are doing so well and pray for complete remission and "cure" forever! :D
