I can't understand my M-spike lab result. Can anyone tell me what this means?
"There is a persistent gamma migrating monoclonal paraprotein currently identified as IgG lambda by immunofixation electrophoresis and currently quantitated at 0.95 gms/dl. Previously the M-spike measured 1.11 gms/dl on 08/26/14."

Re: Can't understand my M-spike results
Chuck,
Not sure what your question is since your question has all the info.
Your M-spike was 1.11 g/dL and is now 0.95 g/dL (not a big change, but in the right direction, for sure). You have IgG lamdba type multiple myeloma (the most common type of multiple myeloma).
What else are you trying to figure out from this?

The doctor wont tell me anything until all test results are in, I got all this info from my medical file online. I just don't know what it means

Re: Can't understand my M-spike results
Chuck,
I didn't realize you are a brand new member here on the forum. It might be helpful if you first provide some background on your current diagnosis and situation, including what led up to you being tested for multiple myeloma. In any case, welcome to the forum!

Re: Can't understand my M-spike results
A neurologist found high proteins in my blood, put me on Folbic [folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12] to bring my proteins down. After 30 days proteins were still high at 28.9, and he sent me to an oncologist .
Re: Can't understand my M-spike results
Chuck,
First, understand that the monoclonal paraprotein is an abnormal copy of a protein, specifically a "bum" copy of one of your antibody cells-- the IgG immunoglobulin in your case. Normally, these shouldn't be present in a person.
When were the detailed online lab tests taken? This is only one small subset of the tests that they likely took and it's difficult to draw any conclusions from just these tests. But, it's peculiar to me that your August 26, 2014 test and most recent test stated:
This means your M-spike was 1.11 g/dL and is now 0.95 g/dL . The monoclonal paraprotein type is IgG lamdba, as detected by immonfixation.
Yet, the online test results state that you have NO monoclonal paraprotein (that's why I am asking about the date of these online tests). Note that the immunofixation test is very good at detecting monoclonal paraprotein, but it doesn't tell you how much is present.
Online Test Results: "The protein electrophoresis has a normal pattern. There is NO detectable monoclonal protein by immunofixation electrophoresis"
Given that you had a couple of previous lab readings with an M-spike, I would suggest seeking out an oncologist that specializes in multiple myeloma to get to the bottom of this. If you let us know where you live, folks on this site can make some recommendations of specific institutes or docs to seek out.
Hope this helps a little.
