HI all,
I am new to this Forum and appreciate the knowledge passed on. I have been diagnosed
with MGUS and PN last year and doing well.
Right now I am working my way through The Beacon Staff posting Feb.14 2O12 "Natural Supplements" So far, I couldn't find the answer to the Subject line. My ortho doctor injected hyaluronic acid in both of my knees for extreme pain. The injections only helped for a short time and knee surgery/replacement was advised.
Instead I started taking liquid oral hyaluronic acid and within days I was almost painfree. I also added liquid glucosamine. My Dr. told me to continue this he is aware of my MGUS.
I searched the internet for the safety of those supplements. There are many conflicting links
and studies claiming HA promotes the spread of multiple myeloma cells. Other links say the opposite. HA is used with different molecules to treat cancer.
What now? Would my Dr. at Kaiser Permanente give me HA injections if there is a concern? Am I feeding the MGUS? I wrote to the company which sells the HA product they answered promptly that one of their medical staff members will get back to me for answers asap.
Are any of you taking Hyaluronic acid and Glucosamine for Arthritis pain with your Dr's approval? If you can share/advice please let me know:
Thank you,
Annegret

Re: Cancer accelerated by hyaluronic acid and glucosamine?
Dear Augentoll,
I would be surprised if hyaluronic acid taken orally would have an impact on MGUS. Unfortunately, it has not been studied to any meaningful degree, so we just do not know. I would discuss this with your physician and see if there are other tried and true therapies for your arthritis. From there, you can weigh the benefits of continued hyaluronic acid therapy for your arthritis against a theoretical risk of MGUS progression (again, I would be surprised if there is any problem with this).
Good luck!
Pete V.
