Can Revlimid cause heart problems?

by SusanS on Fri Aug 22, 2014 11:14 pm

It's late Friday night and I'm just finding out my mom (75 years old, diagnosed May 2, 2014) has been in the hospital since yesterday. I haven't been able to get a lot of information yet, so hopefully will learn tomorrow.

What I know so far:

May 02, 2014 She was diagnosed (multiple myeloma with primary amyloidosis ... I believe stage 1, maybe have been stage 2)
May 05, 2014 She underwent surgery to remove a large tumor & insert metal plates in her hip.
Jun 09, 2014 She started chemo & Revlimid (as part of a study I believe).

Chemo is infusions Monday / Tuesday every week for 3 weeks, with one week off.

After less than 2 weeks she developed a rash. They reduced her Revlimid dosage.

A few days later she developed massive nose bloods (gushers that lasted anywhere from 45 min to 2 hours). They reduced the Revlimid dosage again.

Now she's in the hospital with another possible reaction to the Revlimid. I had all of a 3 minute conversation with her tonight, so I don't know everything (hopefully will get more info tomorrow). Pneumonia not totally ruled out yet. No blood clots in her lungs. However, there's a possibility that her heart capacity has diminished to 60% (if confirmed, it is irreversible).

My question - Can such heart damage be caused by Revlimid?

Don't know what chemo infusion your mom is getting but our 33 year old daughter developed an irregular heartbeat from Velcade. Now she is on heart meds.

Hi Susan,

The rash your mother experienced was most likely due to the Revlimid. It often seems to cause rashes.

Revlimid is not generally known to cause heart issues. As TJ13 suggested, the heart problem probably is related to the infused drug that your mother is getting.

It's possible that she is being given Velcade. However, if she getting infusions two days in a row, that sounds more like Kyprolis (carfilzomib). It's in the same class of drugs as Velcade. There were concerns raised about possible heart related side effects from Kyprolis before the drug was approved a couple of years ago.

Ok, got a BIT more info this morning ... in addition to the Revlimid she is on Kyprolis (carfilzomib) (infused Mondays & Tuesdays) and Decadron (dexamethasone) (taken Monday mornings only). They did a cardio MRI last night, but no results yet, so no confirmation yet about heart damage, or extent thereof.

Apparently mom wasn't looking good Thursday and the in-home care CNA urged her to go to the cancer center. From there they moved her to the hospital by ambulance. The only thing for sure that they've diagnosed so far is a UTI.
