Can Myeloma Spread to Other Organs

by aaron on Thu Jul 07, 2011 11:45 am

My mom was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 Myeloma and the started induction with Velcade and Dex. She has had a VG response.
Now she has had mid-section bloating and discomfort.

A CT Scan has revealed multiple Liver Lessions. Is this a spread from Myeloma? I have read Myeloma rarely spreads but I am not so sure I believe this.

Thanks.

Hello aaron,
Yes, myeloma can travel to the liver although it is quite unusual. A liver biopsy will be necessary to determine the cause of these liver lesions. They could be many different things and one cannot assume they are secondary to the myeloma.

Thank you Dr Libby. We are anxiously awaiting the biopsy results.

The fluid removed was tested and non-cancerous. One down and one to go I guess.

The results are indeed liver cancer. I miss the plain old Myeloma days. Just when you think you have a crappy hand and it can not get worse, it does.
I wish you all the best and I hope a cure or new wonder drug is around the corner. I am certain for you folks, it gets closer by the day.
