Can Multiple Myeloma symptoms hide?

by scott on Fri Oct 08, 2010 3:32 am

Hi I'm a 49 year old male and for the last year have been having burning body pains all over. At first it was only occasional but now it's daily and so far only 2 Vicaprofin 7.5/200 can control the pain for 3-4 hours at best. My specialist ran some additional blood tests and found MGUS. After that just to be cautious did a bone survey and then found a lesion in my skull. Next step is a CT and possible Bone Marrow. Funny thing I don't show any other symptoms, no high Calcium, no night sweats, no renal failure, no bone pain, etc. Doctor says multiple myeloma is unlikely but all of the sudden there is a lesion which they are going to CT tomorrow. Could my full body pains be connected or just coincidental symptoms that allowed the others through testing to show???

Good Morning
When I was diagnosed I had no symptoms the odd little pain here and there , but I chalked it up to being 40. I thoght I had sinus congestion that just wouldnt go away so they finnally ordered a CT and thats when they found bone lesions in my skull all my blood work was perfect and my kidney function was good. After the CT they ordered a protien electrophoresis blood test and it showed paraprotien and then a bone marrow biopsy and skeletal survey which showed my bones were like swiss chees. Then the fun began I definately had IgD stage 3 Multiple myeloma . If I can help in any other way with questions just ask

Hi Scott and slee, I'm sorry to hear about all of the pain your both having. Knowing something's wrong, seeing lots of doctors, and waiting for the diagnosis or not getting the answers you need is one of the toughest parts. Have your doctors checked for bone lesions? Protein in your blood or urine? Have you had a bone marrow biopsy done? I think those tests should tell you whether you do or don't have myeloma.

Scott, if your doctor rules out myeloma right now, you should be aware that MGUS can progress to multiple myeloma. There are a number of articles and forum discussions on this site that you might find helpful. Here's one that came to mind: https://myelomabeacon.org/news/2010/08/16/mgus-and-smoldering-multiple-myeloma-experts-identify-risk-factors-for-disease-progression-and-establish-monitoring-guidelines-part-1-mgus/

Thanks Theresa, Slee, and Jack L. for the information. I had my CT today and expect to hear results on Monday or Tuesday. They did the bone survey a few days ago and did find a lesion but of course I'm hoping it's just a old scar from being dropped on my head :-)

I'm sorry about your pain slee I hope there is something they can do to help. My doctor is trying a few things and it can't hurt to ask your doctor for other options, maybe methadone...

We went through the chemo stuff when my daughter had leukemia at age 2 1/2. She's 11 now but I hope my wife doesn't have to go through this again.

Thanks again everyone for the information.

What happened with your CT? I'm new to the this site but have been living this "unknown" hell for 3 months. I fell in April and had a compression fracture on my L-1. I had kypho for repair and the biopsy was negative at the fracture. Two docs were sure I had osteoporosis. I had a bone density and my bones were in excellent condition.

My endo doc started running tests and found elevated calcium and M-Spike of .6. Turns out the calcium is now below normal because it was caused from Blood Pressure med. My M-Spike is now .3. My blood work is in normal range except for the M-Spike. No symptoms.
I am fully aware that I have MGUS.

Next was the 24 hour UA with scant protein. (Still MGUS) Now I have had a bone scan and a spot was found on my right femur. Then I had a bone scan with radiation injected and there were two spots "active" the one on my right femur and one on my right arm. My onc doc keeps asking if I have forgotten an old injury. I had a CT yesterday. I'm scared, but also just want an answer. You are the closest to my situation that I have found.

Thanks

Hi nana2010 my CT came back kind of confusing. They said it confirms there is a lesion in my right parietal bone but they believe it is benign though they have no explanation for it. I still suffer from daily pains. Did the 24 Hour urine test, waiting on those results. I do have MGUS in the high-risk range. I'll need to dial up my pain pills soon. I'm at 6 vicaprofen a day now. That's a total of 45mg of hydrocodone with 1200mg of Ibuprofen. 2 pills last no longer that 4 hours and I get numbness and other lower level pain constantly now that finds no relief.

Hi Scott,

Just a quick thought as I'm on my out of the door this morning. I've read that for some people with myeloma diagnosis Ibuprofen is not such a good drug to use, something to do with kidney function.

Maybe someone a little wiser than me can explain it a bit further

Thanks scooby for the info I'll look it up and discuss with my doc. Sorry for the rambling in my last message, it was late I was half asleep except for the pain that was really messing with me last night.

Scott, I also did not have any symptoms, just a Life insurance blood test that showed high proteins.

Take care
