Can multiple myeloma elevate parathyroid levels?

by raven777 on Tue Feb 05, 2013 11:37 am

I have elevated light chains in both urine and serum and an abnormal lambda/kappa ratios. However, I also have a high parathyroid level. I have a high calcium level and have debilitating bone pain in my back, ribs hips, and shins. Could the parathyroid cause severe bone pain by itself? Thanks if you can shed some light on this. Myeloma can cause bone pain and high calcium levels but the parathyroid levels in this setting are usually suppressed. The high parathyroid levels in the setting of high calcium suggests you may have a primary parathyroid disorder and should be evaluated by an endocrinologist. If you are found to have primary hyperparathyroidism, there are treatments available for this. This would not necessarily explain the elevated light chains and abnormal kappa/lambda ratio, however, so if you haven't done so I would also suggest evaluation by a hematologist/oncologist. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks Dr. Cohen, for your response. I just heard from my endocrinologist about new blood tests and the results of an ultrasound of my parathyroid. My calcium level came down from 11.2 to 10.7 and nothing was found abnormal on the ultrasound. The dr. said I could get a scan if I want. Previously, I did see a hemotologist who I will be following up with this week. Originally, he also thought this could be my parathyroid gland but did more blood tests and a urine test as I was on my way out. These were some of my results: Free Kappa Serum, H 30.1 no spike,. Free kappa urine H 75.20, Free Kappa/Lambda H 13.12, ESR H 45, serum protein 8.7, IgA 600, beta globulin H 1.6, also nitrite in urine and occult bood (treated for a UTI). (These results were also posted under the title, "help! abnormal lab results".). I'm hoping when I follow up he'll do some more testing because I really don't feel well and the pain hurts. :(
