This is kind of a lame question but I'm going to ask it anyway.
I have my first MRI on my spine scheduled for Monday. I have a permanent "retainer" - metal wire - across the bottom of my teeth that was cemented in place when I got my braces off oh 15 years ago or so. I never got it removed because I didn't want my teeth to shift.
Now I'm worried that I am not going to be able to get the MRI because of the metal. Can I still have the MRI L-spine even though I have a metal wire in my mouth?

Re: Can I have an MRI if I have a metal wire in my mouth?
When you go for your MRI tell the technologist that you have this retainer.
The simple answer is Yes, you should be able to have an MRI of your lower back. You may need to go to an MRI that is a lower field strength, (1,5T instead of 3T)
Call the MRI that you are going to a head of time and tell them about your retainer. Lot's of people have them, so they know how to deal with them.

Great question. What about if you have a titanium plate in your cervical spine? How much will that affect being able to have a whole body MRI?

Miss Molly,
As long as the titanium plate is not new, it will only make reading images of your spine where the plate is more difficult. The images kind of reflect off of the plate and make a white flash area.
Again, I am not an expert, so be sure to tell the person you make the appointment with that you have one, and tell the technician doing your scan as well.

I can't comment on the wire in the mouth, but can about titanium plates. I have multiple joint replacements and have been able to have MRI's.

You will need to have the dentist/doctor who put the retainer in check with the company that makes it if it is MRI compatible.
