BUN level increasing - should I be concerned?

by skolman on Thu Jun 04, 2015 5:01 pm

I have a question ...

My BUN level has been increasing with each blood test, from 16 in 2013 to 27 now. Should I be concerned?

My creatinine level seems ok at 0.7.

Also, my red count is a little low at 3.87. Is this anything to worry about?

Susan,

It is imperative that you remain hydrated. Are you drinking enough water? You should ask your doctor about your BUN level, though.

Hello Susan,

Did you ever learn anymore about your increasing BUN? I have about the same numbers you posted here.

I wonder if there is any significance placed on BUN / creatinine ratio in multiple myeloma? These numbers show an increased ratio outside of normal range.

Thanks
J

I would emphasize what Mrozdav said earlier. Hydration can have a significant impact on BUN levels and both my GP and onc always remind me of this fact. I can really see a difference in my BUN numbers depending on how much I hydrate 24 hours before a lab draw. Over the past 3 1/2 years, my BUN has bounced between 13 and 27 mg/dL with a standard deviation of 5.2

My BUN bounces around too. For the past couple of months it was in the 20's, up to 28. Last blood test it went down to 16. I always hydrate, so I don't know what to attribute the change to, except recently I have begun to drink decaffeinated coffee again, and I also have a glass of white wine, over ice, with dinner. Maybe it has nothing to do with anything, who knows?

My kidneys are slightly compromised, with a creatinine of 1 - 1.2, but lately it has also been closer to 1. My oncologist says it should be under 1 because I am a small woman. My eGFR is below 60, usually in the 50's somewhere.

We myeloma patients have so much blood work, so we are very attuned to all of these changes, which can happen in the general population, as well.

For awhile my alkaline phosphatase (liver panel) was elevated. I asked my hem/onc about it and he didn't think anything of it. He said it was probably due to treatment. Sure enough, after a few months, it came down (even though I was getting the same maintenance treatment). Now it is in the normal range. Susan, I think your read count is fine. My last reading was 3.65.
