Proposed Book Club Guidelines

by Beacon Staff on Thu Jul 03, 2014 10:36 am

Welcome to the Myeloma Beacon's online book club, serving the multiple myeloma community worldwide.

The book club is open to participation by anyone from the myeloma community, whether patient, caregiver, family member, or medical professional. It is not necessary to be a registered member of the forum to participate or to help select the books discussed by the book club.

Each month, at least one book will be selected to be read and discussed by members of the book club. When a book is selected, it will be given its own sub-forum of the book club forum. The sub-forum will be dated to indicate when the book is to be discussed. This will make it possible for the book to be discussed again in the future, in a new sub-forum, by different members of the book club should there be enough interest in discussing it again.

Members of the book club are free to read and discuss as many of the books currently being read as they wish.

Guidelines for Reading and Discussing The Books

Currently, we do not think it necessary to impose any restrictions on how the books are discussed in each sub-forum, or when postings can be made in the sub-forum while the book is being read.

Thus, as you are reading the book you have selected to read -- or after you are finished reading it -- feel free to start a new discussion in the book's sub-forum on whatever topic related to the book you would like to discuss. Have a question about something in the book? Post your question as a new sub-forum discussion thread? Have some thoughts about a chapter or passage in the book? Post them in a new discussion thread.

Or, if you prefer, just read the book and, whenever you feel like it, post comments on other discussions in the sub-forum that have been started by others.

We have only one suggested rule for discussion threads and their titles. If you want to discuss a topic that would "spoil" the book for others who have not yet finished, or gotten to the relevant point in, the book, please

  • Use a topic description that does not contain "spoilers"
  • Include the text "(spoilers)" at the end of the discussion / topic title to tip people off to the possibility of spoilers
These are the only guidelines that we would suggest for now for the book club discussions.

However, if club participants would like there to be more structure than we've proposed, or have other ideas about how to organize and run the club discussions, don't hesitate to share your ideas. We've intentionally included the word "proposed" in the title of this discussion thread.

We do suggest that discussion about a particular book be open for the month it is to be read and the month thereafter, but then closed at the end of the second month. Closing discussions on topics or in forums is not something we have done in the forum in the past. In this case, though, we think it could be a good idea in this case, as it could help ensure that there are big enough groups of people in the future interested in reading together a book that already has been read by some members of the club.

So, ladies and gentlemen, get out your books, put your glasses or contact lenses in place (as necessary) ... and start reading and discussing! :)

Thanks so much for setting up the book club, Beacon Staff. I did go over to the 'Forums Home' and noted that a new section is there, and that the first two books are 'Enjoy Every Sandwich' and also 'The Emperor of all Maladies'. I will start to read them both, and actually have read 'The Emperor of all Maladies' a couple of years ago, so that will be a re-read for me.

They were both available from my public library, fortunately. Steve did earlier post in about an online book store (Better World Books) where books are available at a reasonable cost, and also of course there are lots of book stores out there! Thanks to Dr. Stafl and Dr. Goodman for suggesting the top books too.

I sent this information out to my support group and to some other friends I know with myeloma so I hope that some of them might like to participate also! I look forward to discussion with such an interesting, international group too. This will be quite a change from my regular book club, which is local and involves a coffee morning!

Have a great day, and thanks again. Enjoy your 4th of July holiday to everyone reading in the US!

This is great. Thanks, everyone, for coming up with the idea and getting it implemented.

A couple of thoughts and suggestions.

I wonder if it would make sense in the forum for each book to set up in advance a discussion thread dedicated to each chapter of the book. That way, as people are going along and reading the book, they could share thoughts and impressions about what they read, chapter by chapter.

Since just about every book has chapters or some sort of organizational structure, this is something that could be done by default for every book.

A couple of other ideas that I've considered but haven't really thought through:

A. Would it be useful to come up with, say, 3-5 standard questions that also could be discussion topics for just about every book? I'm thinking about questions such as "What did you really like about the book?", "What did you really not like about the book?", "What was the most interesting thing about the book?", etc. (I would imagine that, for fiction books, these sorts of general questions would require a spoiler alert.)

B. Would it be useful to have as one of the initial threads a question that asks: Who plans on reading the book? This might help people commit to reading the book, which some people might appreciate. I also just wonder if it might be helpful for everyone to know who else is reading the book along with them. Oh ... it might also be a way to find out if anyone wants to be the "leader" for the month's book selection, although I'm not 100 percent sure what the "leader" would do.

C. Although I like the idea of being able to discuss the book at just about anytime while it's being read, there might be something nice about having one or two specific dates and times where people agree in advance to get together and post thoughts, questions, and comments in what would essentially be a "live" thread for, say, an hour or 90 minutes.

Hope this helps. Again, I really like the idea of these discussion groups.

Hi Jonah,

Those are interesting ideas about running an online book club. I think that many of us readers will be new to a book club forum, and it could be interesting as to how the first books are reviewed! So probably we will learn as we go along with this ... hopefully will be reading your posts too.

I just finished reading 'Enjoy Every Sandwich and I couldn't put it down. It's really interesting. I won't say more until August, though, when more would have had a chance to read it.

Thanks for your comments, Nancy.

It seems a shame for you to wait all the way until August to post your thoughts about the book, given that you just read it. One of the reason I made my suggestions is that I thought some of them would encourage people to post their impressions and questions as they were still fresh in their mind, rather than waiting until some arbitrary date when everyone is done.

This is one of the main advantages, it seems to me, of an online book club compared to a "bricks and mortar" book club. People can post thoughts, impressions, and questions as they're going along, rather than waiting until everyone else is done with the book at some specific date and time (although you still can do something like that, too, as I suggested in my original posting).

I don't know if I'll be able to join in for this round of reading. But I still think the book club is a great idea and I'd like to see it be successful.

Great to hear that you enjoyed Lipsenthal's book.

Thanks for your comments, Jonah. I think that I will wait a bit to post my impressions of the book. It takes me a while to think about it anyways! Hopefully others are reading too and we can start to discuss it later.
