Medication for bone pain?

Wife has uncontrolled pain in shoulder/upper back. She is currently on methadone 15mg every 8 hours plus 15-30 mg morphine every 2 hours for breakthrough pain. She has just started using the morphine for breakthrough. She was on 40 mg of dexamethasone a day as part of her chemo regimen but that's now over with. I know dex helps with pain so she had less during dex treatment.

My question is, what combination pain medication have people here found the most effective for their myeloma bone pain?

Have you had her checked for lung issues? Pleural effusion? That can mimic upper back /shoulder pain and sometimes will wrap around the ribs. Steroids will be the best thing. I know percocet didnt help, NSAIDs didnt help.

Thanks Kristen for your reply. Interesting thought, I will ask her doctor about it. My wife had lung tests before her chemo regiment and the tester told her A for effort but bad results. We never followed up on the test as they went ahead with her treatment anyway so it couldn't have been too bad.

Good suggestion about looking into possible lung problems! Who is managing your wife's pain? Is she being seen by a palliative care doctor who specializes in treating cancer related pain issues? If not I would suggest that.

Doctor said her chest x-rays came out ok. So no lung problems. Her current meds are prescribed by a palliative pain doctor. They also want to do spine surgery with cement to support her spine but they need to get her platelets up first. Currently 33 with 1.5 white blood cells. Her platelets and white blood cells haven't gone up at all this week.

After the back surgery they want to do a second modified CVAD chemo treatment followed by a full allo transplant.
