Pain in upper leg from bone marrow biopsy
Has anybody experienced pain coming down and across their rear end, then around front to the upper part of the leg and down the thigh, after a bone marrow biopsy? Pain is not below the knee. I'm wondering if it is possible that the needle used in the bone biopsy struck a nerve.
Re: Pain in upper leg from bone marrow biopsy
I have never experienced the pain you described from a bone marrow biopsy, but I have always been curious if it is possible, or what the likelihood is of striking a nerve coming off the spine during a bone marrow biopsy. I am not an anatomy expert, but I know there are a lot of nerves that come off the spine and run down into the legs. Maybe in that area of the hip where they do the biopsy the nerves are close to, but not in, that particular area. I really do not know. Maybe someone with more knowledge about this can shed some light on this. I can see where hitting a nerve or not may account for the big variation in pain levels people seem to have with the bone marrow biopsy.
In your case, I certainly would be asking myself the question if a nerve was hit, and, if it was, is there any concern about that. Will it mend itself on its own?

Dial up "Dermatone and Nerve distributions" on your Internet.
Trace your "symptoms"--see if they correlate to a known Dermatone distribution.
Anti-inflammatories and a tincture of time, often help resolve these "wild Children".
Good luck.

Yes, most likely it is sciatic nerve irritation. Fortunately for me I, the pain was short lived.
Try lying on your stomach with a pillow under your stomach.

Re: Pain in upper leg from bone marrow biopsy
Thanks Eric, Rneb, and Tori. Tylenol, tramadol (Ultram), and a heating pad have really helped out today. I asked my doctor, and he told me there are a lot of nerves in that area.
I got a good result from the biopsy ... less than 5% myeloma cells (compared to 40% in January), so that's something to be grateful for.

That is great news Spirit! Good to see things are going in the right direction for you. And thank you and Rneb for the 411 on the nerves. The answer to my questions are yes and it looks like so far in my biopsies I have been lucky.

@Rneb....haha, Thx. My labs were good so my Lab got an extra milk bone treat but I'm sure ice cream would be welcomed with a wagging tail.
