Re: Bone marrow biopsy with conscious sedation - options?

Nikki - I had only 2% in my aspirate and 5-10% in the core. I don't understand why it was stated in a range except that "there are increased plasma cells, mainly scattered singly in an interstitial distribution." The oncologist thought this was very interesting. But, as he stressed to me, and as explained here on the Beacon, often a BMB will vary depending on the site.

So, cheers for good BMB results!

My clinic (vanderbilt in Nashville) uses conscious sedation if requested for BMB's. They use Versed in small doses. It really makes a difference for me. Although, I must admit that I have forgone sedation in favor of my morning coffee and doughnut on occasion because they require me to fast after midnight if I choose sedation.

As a retired nurse administrator, I can tell you the decision is likely related to staffing at your clinic. For safety reasons, most facilities will require an anesthesiologist or advanced care practitioner on hand if using conscious sedation. I have found that if you stand your ground, the clinic will help you find a suitable location, or compromise their typical protocol.
